Growth Report | Your Partner in Philanthropy

Please join us in welcoming Annie Tutt, MPH, CFRE, to the team as our new Philanthropy Director.

Annie first cut her teeth in fundraising while in college. As a student fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network she caught the fever for connecting purpose driven people with the good causes that need their investment. Over the course of her nearly 20 years in the nonprofit sector, she has helped a wide variety of nonprofits cultivate fulfilling relationships with their individual, corporate, and foundation funders. Hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, Annie relocated to the Denver Metro area in 2021 after a trip to the region captured the hearts of her outdoor-loving family.

“Coming from the sunshine state, I honestly couldn’t have asked for a warmer welcome than that which I’ve received from the Brent’s Place community,” said Annie. “Now that we’re able to safely open our doors to the larger community, I’m excited share all the wonderful things I’ve learned about this organization – and the growth ahead on the horizon – with those looking to make meaningful, local impact.”

When Annie isn’t cultivating relationships with her special dose of southern charm, she can be found traveling the globe and enjoying the great outdoors with her husband, daughters, and two dogs.

Annie can be reached directly at atutt@brentsplace.org or 720-343-2828.

Growth Report | Supporting Pediatric Families

Please join us in welcoming Gerri Persin to the team and her new role of Family Support Manager – Pediatrics.

A lifelong nonprofit professional, Gerri has worked with older adult populations at CJE SeniorLife and with families and youth most recently at Judi’s House. Gerri's background in sociology and aging studies makes her a wonderful fit for our team as she works to create strong connections with clients, colleagues, and program partners to make an impact within the Brent's Place community.

“I am really excited to work closely with families at Brent’s Place, offering support and help wherever I can," Gerri says. "Brent’s Place has a huge heart to help the families who stay with us, and I am looking forward to being part of the close-knit team here.”

Gerri moved to Denver a few years ago from Chicago. She enjoys spending time with her spouse and two teenage children. They enjoy the great outdoors, baking bread and sweet treats, watching documentaries, and reading.

Volunteer Spotlight | Making a Difference Locally

Being pre-med at CU Denver, Joanna was interested in getting involved with her community to learn more about the needs of local populations. Living only five minutes from Brent’s Place pediatric campus, she realized she had the perfect opportunity to give back right in her own backyard.

“I never realized how important long term care was,” she said, speaking to the lack of discussion about aftercare in many of her classes. “What happens after they’re diagnosed? Brent’s Place is a cool opportunity for families living far from treatment. There’s a space for them to be close to the hospital.”

The access families have to life-saving medical treatment is close to Joanna’s heart and the reason she’s chosen a career in the healthcare field. “The inequality the Hispanic population faces really drives me,” she said, adding that due to socio-economic inequity and language barriers, Hispanic patients often don’t receive the care they desperately need. “I know I want to help the community, especially locally. These people around me feel like my own family.”

In her role as a Front Desk volunteer, Joanna is the first face many families see on their daily medical journey, providing a smile, guidance, and compassion for each of our residents. We’re so grateful to her for volunteering her time to the families of Brent’s Place and wish her success in her future career goals!

  • The 23rd Annual Brent’s Place Invitational: Event Recap

The 23rd Annual Brent’s Place Invitational: Event Recap

On August 29th, Brent’s Place supporters gathered for our 23rd annual invitational golf tournament. Presented by Real Estate Investment Advisors (REIA) and BOK Financial, this event was a chance for our community to connect on the links while raising money to support the heart-filled work of caring for families facing medical crisis.

As morning dawned, friends of Brent’s Place arrived, mingled, and warmed up on the driving range. One by one, golfers teed-off in honor of our families and headed onto Columbine Country Club’s beautifully manicured course. Out on the links, friends and colleagues were put to the test, both by the challenges of the course and Brent's Place trivia for the chance to receive an advantage farther down the course. After, players enjoyed cocktails and conversation while looking out over the greens.

Our sincere thanks to everyone who came out in support of Brent’s Place and the families in our care. From the 132 players to committee members, volunteers, and partners who helped us execute the tournament smoothly, your contributions made it an event to remember. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to our Silver and Bronze sponsors: Liberty Home Products, Alpine Bank, and Moody's Insurance Agency. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, $158,000 was raised for families in need of compassionate care as they travel far from home in search of a medical miracle. This surpasses our fundraising goal by more than $25,000!

Avi Petrucci, External Affairs Coordinator for Brent’s Place summed up the event by saying, "We are extraordinarily appreciative of the support from our incredible community during this year's Invitational. Thank you, Columbine Country Club, our sponsors, and everyone who participated. Without all of your support and dedication, this event, which greatly benefits the families we serve, would not be possible. We truly enjoyed our time with you and are eagerly looking forward to next year! Here's to 25 more years of compassionate care at Brent's Place!"

We can’t wait to reconnect with our friends next year! Check out pictures from the tournament here and sign up to get on the list to hear about our next invitational golf tournament coming in 2023. Until then, aim high and swing hard!

Growth Report | New Team Members in External Affairs and Family Support

Summer sun means a growing garden – and team! This season, we welcomed two new team members to the Brent’s Place staff. Lending their talents to the External Affairs and Family Support teams, these two compassionate colleagues are already essential to the ongoing care of our families.

Avi Petrucci (left), a long-time volunteer and friend of Brent’s Place, first joined us earlier this year in a temporary role as Family Support Administrative Assistant. In June, she transitioned to the newly created role of External Affairs Coordinator. Drawing on previous experience in event planning and customer service, her focus at Brent’s Place will be on special events, mid-level donor relationship building, and corporate outreach.

“From a young age, I knew that I wanted to work in the nonprofit sector and make a difference in other people's lives,” she says. “I am so happy to be joining the Brent’s Place team to do just that.”

In her free time, she can be found in the kitchen, baking and cooking, or reading, spending time outdoors, and crafting.

Bri Cavanaugh (right) joins Brent's Place as our new Family Support Administrative Assistant, responsible for family enrollment and housing for pediatric patients and their families. With over 25 years of experience in nonprofits and education, as well as a Masters degree in Mental Health and Wellness with a focus on Family Dynamics, she brings a wealth of knowledge to her role on the frontline with our families.

"I've always known it was my purpose to service families and youth,” Bri adds. “It’s an honor to be able to support families in one of their most vulnerable spaces."

Outside of work, Bri enjoys physical activities (walking, kickboxing, Barre and yoga), exploring anime with her children and husband, reading, and writing.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to our new team members! We are so happy they have chosen to share their talents with Brent's Place.

  • Volunteer Spotlight | Zookeeper Dave

    Volunteer Spotlight | Zookeeper Dave

July got wild with Zookeeper Dave, who visited our Aurora campus for the first time since 2019. In addition to more than 25 years of working with all manner of wild animals at the Denver Zoo, Dave is an author, artist, and passionate conservationist. He brought that same dedication to our pediatric residents with personalized presentations about the importance of conservation with the aid of fossils, bones, and even a gigantic four-pound elephant molar! Each resident left with their own set of books and a new understanding of how to be an animal advocate.

While COVID limited visits from program partners like Dave, he’s thrilled to be back, meeting residents outside. “I really feel the community here,” he said.

While Dave’s passion for protecting animals has been a lifelong pursuit, the effort was formalized in 2014 with the formation of the Katie Adamson Conservation Foundation, named in honor of a friend and conservation ally of Dave’s who passed away from Ewing sarcoma at age 25. Just one year later, Dave began making regular visits to Brent’s Place to share his message and meet the residents, many of whom are navigating similar paths to the one Katie traveled.

The similarities between KACF and Brent’s Place are part of what keeps Dave coming back, year after year. “We’re both creating something special and lasting out of grief,” he says. “In Brent’s and Katie’s names, we carry on.”

We’re so grateful to Dave and KACF for bringing this message of hope and resilience to the families of Brent’s Place. You can learn more about the KACF here.

  • Volunteer Spotlight | Delivering Healing With Mary

Volunteer Spotlight | Delivering Healing With Mary

Meet Mary, volunteer extraordinaire! An Aurora native, Mary has been donating her time and talents to Brent’s Place for years. From meal support to our winter holiday gift extravaganza, Mary has seen it all.

“Some people know why they were put here,” Mary says. “Me? I was put on this Earth to help.”

And with a background in both nursing and catering, she knows the importance of nourishing families navigating the uncertainty of a medical emergency.

As a meal support volunteer, Mary puts her culinary skills to work ensuring families receive a hot, fresh dinner. In June, Mary worked side-by-side with her daughter and grandson to serve up sweet and sour chicken dinners for over 100 people! Their afternoon of hard work made a huge impact on caregivers, relieving them of the financial and psychological stress of providing a nourishing meal that night.

Mary also serves up hope and healing once a week by dropping off hot, fresh meals to in-patient families at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Often, in-patient families have little time, energy, and money to devote to eating healthy meals, let alone access to a kitchen to prepare a meal, so delivered meals is a huge help. These short, one-hour shifts mean Mary can make an impact, even with a busy schedule.

“Seeing the families is wonderful,” she says, describing the moment she hands a hot meal to our residents. “Especially when they learn I’m bringing them pizza!”

Using just a few hours of your day, you can deliver compassion to families as a Meal Support volunteer. Learn more about these opportunities below.

  • Family Reunion Updates For 2022

    Family Reunion Updates For 2022

After a two-year hiatus, Block Party (formerly known as Kid’s Cure) is back and better than ever! With our 25th year of service underway, this prized community event returns for a very special Birthday Bash edition!

We wish we were able to honor this milestone alongside our traditional Family Reunion weekend, but due to unforeseen circumstances and continued public health concerns, we will not be hosting the Brent’s Place Family Reunion this year.

We’ll miss gathering our families together for the full weekend of activities, but we look forward to reconnecting with each of you that are able to join us at this year’s Block Party.

For those unable to cover the cost of travel, Brent’s Place has a needs-based travel fund able to offer financial support to families interested in attending this year’s Birthday Bash.

In order to accommodate as many out-of-state families as possible, Brent’s Place is only able to cover the cost of ONE hotel room – on Friday, July 22 – for families needing financial assistance. All hotel reservations will go directly through Brent’s Place, so if you need to stay for additional nights or need more than one room, please be sure to indicate this when registering for Block Party, and we will do our best to accommodate special requests. RSVPs requiring hotel accommodation must be submitted no later than July 9, 2022. Sadly we cannot guarantee that requests received after this date will be met.

To request a hotel room and additional travel assistance, please fill out this form. Please note, you will still need to RSVP for Block Party.

It’s important to us that no family miss Block Party due to financial difficulty. If you need additional travel assistance, please reach out to Allen Browning at abrowning@brentsplace.org or (720) 353-2956.

We hope you’ll be able to attend this quarter-century celebration and connect with friends, old and new. As we celebrate 25 years of compassionate care, we look forward to honoring the many families who have graced our halls and whose stories have touched our hearts. We hope to see you there!

  • Growing Hope | The 2022 IREM Day of Beautification

Growing Hope | The 2022 IREM Day of Beautification

Teamwork truly makes the dream work, especially when that dream is a refreshed courtyard! Earlier this month, our longtime corporate partners at IREM Greater Denver and more than 50 volunteers from nearly 30 member organizations donated some serious sweat equity to beautifying the family courtyard of our Aurora campus. From carting wheelbarrows of mulch across the property to weeding, planting, and painting, this group of caring individuals braved the 95 degree heat to provide a place of respite for our families as they navigate a life-threatening diagnosis. Along the way, they reconnected with old friends, expanded their industry networks, and came together as a team to give back. Here are just a few of the stories behind their generosity and compassion.

Over at the garden beds, Jeanette from Baceline Group spent the morning sanding boxes in preparation for a new coat of stain. “To me, this is making a difference. I didn’t know what Brent’s Place was before I came but now I’m so grateful there’s a place like this for families.”

Friends Lisa and Brandy quickly learned the importance of teamwork and laughs to get the job done, quipping: “Friends who mulch together, stay together!” Lisa and Brandy have a combined volunteer history of more than 20 years. Lisa’s interest in supporting Brent’s Place stems from childhood. Growing up, Lisa remembers how her parents struggled when her brother contracted a life-threatening virus. “My parents had some [health] coverage, but if they hadn’t received government assistance, we wouldn’t have been able to do it. So I know all about how important it is to help out families when they are having a hard time.”

That personal connection drives Roberto’s volunteer work, too. Serving as team lead at the Day of Beautification since 2018, Roberto (below, left) said, “My son spent a week in the ICU and just that short period of time made me wonder how these families do it. I know from personal experience that having a place to call your own during a crisis takes some pressure off.”

On the mulching and weeding teams, Bonnie and Ellen (above, center and right) from CBRE appreciated the opportunity to support an organization they believe in while building new connections: “It’s always nice to give back and I love the kids!” Bonnie said. “Plus, this gives us a chance to build relationships with new vendors.” Ellen added, “Bonnie has been a volunteer here for years. It’s so nice to have the support from her to be able to take this day to go serve!”

This collaborative experience was exactly what organizers Ira Coleman of Integrity Fire and Debbie Reece of IREM Greater Denver were hoping for: “It’s about sweat equity, hard work, laughs, and teamwork. Their commitment to hard work is providing peace.” Debbie agreed, adding: “We keep coming back and bringing more volunteers to make an even bigger impact! Brent’s Place is part of our family now.”

Because of IREM Greater Denver and every volunteer who sweat with purpose in support of our families, our courtyard is now ready to welcome families back, providing a healing connection with nature during a time of great uncertainty. For this and their year-round, multifaceted support, we extend our sincere thanks to IREM Greater Denver!

Looking for ways for your group or company to get involved? We’re seeking corporate and community group volunteers to support our summer special events, including Block Party. Indicate your interest here.

  • Volunteer Spotlight | Revving the Creative Engines

Volunteer Spotlight | Revving the Creative Engines

Earlier this month, families had a chance to make their mark on a super cool Corvette! Owner Adam and volunteers Angy and Naomi provided stencils, a special rubber-based paint, and some helpful hints to pediatric residents before they began to spray away. From sugar skulls to freehanded designs, family members added their own unique touches to this mobile fundraising canvas. Once complete, Adam will drive the masterpiece for the rest of the year, visiting car shows and local events to raise funds for cancer research and support services.

Adam has been offering his Corvette to creative Brent's Place families since 2015 as a tribute to his wife, Dee Jai, who passed away from stomach cancer in 2004.

"She picked the car out and it has lots of memories for us," Adam said. "Dee Jai would have liked what we're doing a lot, and so I always put a dragonfly on it somewhere for her."

Prepping the car for painting is a multi-day process, with an entire day devoted to peeling off the previous year's design. Adam then painstakingly covers the original paint with several layers of rubber coating and takes steps to protect the tires, windows, and detail work. Three to four days later, it's ready for the creativity of our families.

"Often people want to memorialize someone or honor someone they're caring for," Adam said of the breadth of designs. "And really, I think it's cathartic. For me, too."

We're so grateful to Adam, Angy, and Naomi for providing this fun treat for our families and we can't wait to see them next year.
