Each spring, The Brent’s Place Lectureship brings nationally recognized medical experts to Children’s Hospital Colorado to foster collaboration, education, and innovation in pediatric care. The program supports the shared goal of improving treatment outcomes for pediatric hematology and oncology patients.

The visiting professor is selected by the clinical team at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Through lectures and faculty engagement, the program creates opportunities for physicians and care teams to exchange ideas, discuss emerging research, and explore advances in treatment approaches that can directly benefit patients and their families.

In addition to participating in educational sessions and meetings with Children’s Hospital Colorado faculty, the visiting professor tours Brent’s Place and spends time with staff, board members, and volunteer leaders during a hosted dinner. These moments of connection over the two-day visit allow the visiting professor to gain a deeper understanding of the organization’s mission and the supportive environment Brent’s Place provides for families navigating complex medical treatment, and allow Brent’s Place leadership to gain perspective on housing resources and their role in supporting families at other health systems across the country.

This year, Brent’s Place welcomed Dr. Nabil Ahmed, a pediatric oncologist, scientist, and clinical stem cell transplant specialist at the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy of Texas Children’s Hospital. For the past 20 years, he has been working on finding ways to help the immune system target what cancer needs to grow. His team is developing special immune cells that can handle the challenges of cancer treatment and the ways tumors try to protect themselves.

He is especially committed to mentoring a younger generation of scientists to improve the outcomes of children with cancer through translational research.

The Brent’s Place Lectureship continues to serve as a meaningful experience for education, partnership, and progress—strengthening connections between leading medical experts and the providers dedicated to caring for children and families every day.
